HELP US CREATING GIVING SPIRIT FRIENDSHIP CARDS FOR HOMELESS LAUSD STUDENTS

DEADLINE TO DROP OFF 6,000 CARDS AT YOUR LOCAL YMCA IS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2020

The Giving Spirit is one of the oldest and largest non-profit organizations dedicated to helping the homeless of Los Angeles. For the past 20 years we’ve been providing critical assistance by assembling and distributing thousands of survival kits filled with up to 75 life-saving items, from food and hydration, to clothing, hygiene, medical supplies and protection from the elements – to help our unsheltered neighbors though the next day, the next week and the next month.

Then Covid-19 struck, and it exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis.

And the longer the pandemic persists, the greater the impact on those most vulnerable – including over 20,000 homeless children who currently attend Los Angeles Unified School District schools.

Which is why The Giving Spirit is committed to serving 6,000 of our courageous youth by assembling and delivering backpacks filled with school supplies, hygiene items, a holiday gift and voucher for a screening exam, provided by our partners at YMCA Los Angeles through their Vision to Learn initiative.

Each backpack will include a homemade “Friendship Card” – it’s often the first item that the recipients pull from the bag because it tells them just how much we care and gives them hope that they are not forgotten!

We would love the compassion and creativity of our local students to help create these cards. We have spoken with dozens of teachers who have informed us of parents’ desire for meaningful ways to both mentally engage their children while at home, as well as provide a safe and positive outlet for them to assist those less fortunate than themselves during this troubling time.

Completed cards can dropped off at one of our “touchless” card receptacles at any YMCA in greater Los Angeles and at selected LAUSD schools which will be listed on The Giving Spirit and YMCA websites.

This is where you come in…

We would love your compassion and creativity to help create these cards…and make sure it gets to those in need. It’s totally safe and easier than you might think.

First, fold a sheet of 8.5” x 11” paper in half, lengthwise.

Then fold it again, to make your card.

This is the front of the card.

Here is where you show off your art skills! We encourage the use of color in your drawings: markers, crayons, colored pencils – whatever arts supplies you already have in your house.

This is the inside of the card.

Your personal, written message goes here. Write from the heart. Share your love, your encouragement and wishes for the recipient’s good health and safety. You might want to commend them on their tenacity, courage and send a message of welcome and inclusion.

Just think what you’d want to hear during this very scary time, particularly if you are facing COVID-19, cold weather and uncertainty on the streets. And feel free to sign your name, so they know who spent the time and effort to brighten their day.

If you’re feeling inspired, make 2…or 10. We need to reach 6,000 – so get your family, friends and classmates involved!
